In view of the legislative change, as of 1 January 2026, anyone wishing to use a toll road subject to e-vignette with a recreational vehicle, will have to purchase an e-vignette for all recreational vehicles in Hungary.
Accordingly, as of 1 January 2026, it will no longer be possible to pay tolls for the road use of recreational vehicles over 3.5 tonnes that were previously subject to the e-toll system in the HU-GO e-toll system neither as a registered user using an on-board unit, nor by purchasing a route ticket without registration.
D1 or D2 vehicle category?
As with all vehicles, in the case of recreational vehicles, the information and data contained in the vehicle registration certificate or other official document issued for the vehicle must be taken as basis when determining the vehicle category. The data content of fields J (category of vehicle), F.1 (gross weight, maximum authorised mass) and S.1 (number of seats, including the driver’s seat, seating capacity) must all be observed.
To help you choose the correct vehicle category, please consult our vehicle category selection guide for recreational vehicle owners, which provides accurate and reliable information on all eventualities.
For example, all recreational vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3.5 tonnes belong to vehicle category D1, if the vehicle category field in the vehicle registration certificate is marked M1 and the number of seats indicated in field “S.1” is not more than 7, including the driver’s seat.
However, recreational vehicles marked M1 belong to vehicle category D2, regardless of their weight, if their seating capacity exceeds 7 persons.
Recreational vehicles also fall into vehicle category D2, regardless of their seating capacity, if the vehicle is classified according to the letter code M1 in field “J” of the vehicle registration certificate and the vehicle’s weight exceeds 3.5 tonnes.
